Col de Lautaret: fastest way through the mountains
You can choose the D1091, Grenoble – Briançon via the Col du Lautaret. A beautiful road through the mountains from Grenoble. The distance not great, but the drive takes about 3 hours. Don’t mistake this. This road can be jammed or closed in bad weather (snow and wind). Then consider driving through the Fréjus Tunnel.

Frejus tunnel: fewer mountain roads, but 30 min longer and tolls
You can go through the Fréjus tunnel on the A43. Then you pass Italy and the Col de Montgènevre. This road is not faster than via the Col du Lautaret, but you are on the highway longer and less on mountain roads. This tunnel costs locally for a passenger car €44 for a single trip, €55 for a return (note! return is only valid for 7 days).

Route Napoléon over Gap: no col over, 45 min longer
You can also take the Route Napoléon: from Lyon, take the A43/A48 to Grenoble, then towards Gap, then Embrun and Puy-St-Vincent. This route takes about 45 min longer. This route does not require you to cross a real col.
