Parc National des Écrins, arguably France's most beautiful national park. With 150 peaks of more than 3,000 metres, it is undoubtedly at least the highest park in the country. No wonder you will be accompanied on your hikes in this area by peaks up to 4,100 metres, views of glaciers, mountain lakes, clattering waterfalls and fast-flowing rivers and vast alpine meadows full of flowers. The rugged and pristine nature of the Ecrins Massif completes your hike.
There is more nearby, as the lesser-known Parc naturel régional Du Queyras is also worth a mention. This mountain range is lower and less crowded but bursting with beauty and views, of course, of the high Ecrins Massif.
But don't worry and don't be put off by all the vertical altimeters. This 25-piece Collection includes hikes for all ages, from gnome trails through the forest for the very young to more technical passages, but always achievable within one day's hiking. You will find accessible hikes to refuges, tucked high up in the mountains, waiting for your visit. How about a hike to Refuge des Bans with a cheese fondue at the summit or a 'tarte myrtille' on the terrace overlooking the glacier at Refuge Glacier Blanc? Stuff your swimsuit in your backpack and take a dip on one of the hikes along mountain lakes, including Lac de l'Ascension and Le Grand Lac. And of course visit Dormillouse, the last inhabited mountain village in the Ecrins Massif that can only be reached on foot.
The perfect base for many of these walks is Puy Saint Vincent. This mountain village lies on the edge of Parc National des Ecrins, about 20 kilometres south of Briançon. With over 300 sunny days a year, this area is rightly called the sunniest side of the Alps. We fell in love with this region and have now lived here for several years and do not plan to leave for the time being. A number of walks from this Collection start in Puy Saint Vincent and you can dive straight into the Ecrins Massif. For other hikes, take your car and park it at the starting point of the trail.
If you want to stay in Puy Saint Vincent, you can of course come to our own mountain hotel Saint Roch. Our team consists of outdoor enthusiasts who are only too happy to help you on your way. Moreover, my friend Anne cooks delicious food. Her motto is a feast on your plate: local, nutritious and colourful'. Suitable accommodation for groups is chalet AlpeLune, located directly on GR54. Those who prefer camping can go to Croque Loisirs campsite, a friendly and intimate nature campsite with mountain views.
Before setting off, read the route descriptions carefully to avoid any surprises. In addition, make sure you have enough water and food for the road. With hiking poles you will find hiking easier and of course check the weather forecast, as the weather in the mountains can be very changeable.
Finally, during the summer months, herds of sheep graze in the high mountains. Those sheep won't bite you, but for dogs present you have to be alert. As soon as a flock crosses your path, keep a close eye on the dog. Have a 'chat' with him and let him get used to your presence. You will naturally find that he accepts and ignores you after which you can resume your path.
